Michigan Gas Prices Hit Lowest Levels Since 2021

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to finally take that road trip around Michigan (or further), this might be it.

Michigan drivers are starting 2026 with gas prices we haven’t seen in years, and experts say this could be the cheapest year at the pump since 2021. For anyone who loves a scenic drive up north, a weekend in Chicago (traffic aside), or a spontaneous trip to Detroit, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of the road trip.

Here in Grand Rapids and across West Michigan, prices are already noticeably lower, and forecasts suggest they’ll stay that way for most of the year. According to GasBuddy, the average American household is expected to spend about $2,083 on gasoline in 2026, with the national average sitting around $2.97 per gallon.

There will still be a few bumps that will knock gas above the $3 mark throughout the year though. Summer usually pushes prices up, and experts say we’ll probably see gas creep just over the $3 mark during peak travel months…
