Prosecutor: GRPD officers justified in shooting, killing 51-year-old man

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The three Grand Rapids police officers who fatally shot a man during an exchange of gunfire were “completely justified” and will not face criminal charges, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced Monday.

On Dec. 6, three GRPD officers stopped Martin Martinez-Salazar, Sr., 51, during a “high-risk felony traffic stop,” after receiving reports that he was suicidal and had threatened his wife with a gun. Dashcam and body-worn footage released by GRPD shows Martinez-Salazar getting out of his car and firing multiple rounds at the officers. The officers then returned fire, shooting him. They gave him first aid, but he later died at the hospital.

“This is about as clear a case of self-defense or defense of other justification as will ever occur,” Becker said in a statement. “From all the video, and statements of the officers, he opened the door and started firing his gun directly at them. Once this occurred, the officers were completely justified in returning fire.”…
