Grand Rapids river restoration moves forward with federal green light

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Efforts to restore the rapids are one step closer to reality after a federal agency found there would be no significant environmental impact from the changes.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently issued a Notice of Availability of a Final Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the restoration plan.

This means restoring the rapids will not cause significant environmental impact at the local, regional or national level. Now, the environmental assessment is being sent to the NRCS chief to approve the project and consider federal funding for it…
