Grand Rapids settles lawsuit with family of girl handcuffed by police in 2017

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Grand Rapids has agreed to pay $285,000 to settle a federal lawsuit filed by the family of a girl who was held at gunpoint, handcuffed and placed in a cruiser by Grand Rapids police nine years ago.

The lawsuit was resolved as a provisional settlement was reached between the city and attorneys representing the family of Honestie Hodges, according to a Wednesday release from her family’s attorneys.

Honestie diedover five years ago, at age 14, from complications linked to COVID-19. When she was 11, in 2017, she Honestie was stopped and detained by Grand Rapids police outside her home. The girl, her mother and another relative were headed to the store when they were confronted by police with guns drawn.
