Man arrested for allegedly firing shot near crowd in Kentwood

GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 21-year-old Wyoming man was arrested after he allegedly fired a single shot near a group of people earlier this month in Kentwood, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

The shooting happened on Jan. 7 around 11 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex near the intersection of Eastern Avenue SE and 60th Street SE, deputies said.

Authorities said they were called after a disturbance involving a large group of people in the parking lot was reported, and that the sounds of fighting and gunfire were heard. No one was injured.

Investigators later identified Destin Covington as the person they believe fired the single shot so close to the group, according to the sheriff’s office. Following authorization from the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office, authorities said they arrested Covington on Tuesday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, and reckless use of a firearm…
