GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Grand Rapids has agreed to settle with residents of a neighborhood that was flooded in 2024 due to a water main break.
The flooding happened on June 13, 2024, when a water main broke at the intersection of Adams Street SE and Philadelphia Avenue SE. Around 200 homes were placed under a boil water advisory as crews worked to fix the problem.
The break submerged cars and flooded basements. Some residents saw tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. Impacted homeowners previously told News 8 that 13 households saw an estimated total of almost $1 million in damage.
The city of Grand Rapids originally said it was not liable for the damages caused by the flood and that it would not reimburse residents, claiming “governmental immunity.” But on Tuesday, the Grand Rapids City Commission voted to approve a settlement awarding $195,000 to the claimants…
