Man sentenced in GRPD Vice Unit’s ‘largest ever’ fentanyl bust

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man will spend at least four years in prison for what the Grand Rapids Police Department Vice Unit called its largest fentanyl bust its ever made.

Darrell Mitchell, 54, was sentenced to 51 months to 360 months in prison for the delivery or manufacture of between 450 and 999 grams of cocaine, heroin or another narcotic. His sentence was enhanced because he is considered a habitual offender.

In March 2025, the GRPD Vice Unit arrested Mitchell and seized about 1.1 pounds of fentanyl during a bust at Wimbledon Apartments in Grandville. GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom later said that the seizure included 500 grams of pure fentanyl and 250 grams of black tar heroin.
