As temperatures rise, Grand Rapids again enforcing sidewalk snow removal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Grand Rapids says it will again enforce its sidewalk snow removal requirements, following a temporary adjustment prompted by severe weather.

Grand Rapids residents are required to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice within 24 hours of a snow event. When the city gets a complaint about a snowy sidewalk, it will mail a notice to the property owner or post a notice on the property. If the sidewalk still hasn’t been cleared 48 hours after the notice, the city can have its contractor do the work, then send the bill to the property owner.

But last month, as West Michigan faced a period of low temperatures and heavy snowfall, the city adjusted its enforcement. The city said property owners were still responsible for clearing their own sidewalks, but it would not pursue penalties as long as the property owner “show(ed) a good-faith effort to clear snow and ice” and the sidewalk was “reasonably passable.”

Now that the weather is warmer, enforcement is returning to normal, the city said Monday morning. It emphasized that property owners who don’t clear their sidewalks within 24 hours could face penalties…
