Former Ottawa County landfill declared PFAS contamination site

SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The former Sanico North Landfill outside of Nunica has been declared a PFAS contamination site by the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team.

MPART made the declaration on Wednesday. The landfill on 144th Avenue operated from the mid-1960s until the mid-1980s, taking in residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial waste.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy ordered a baseline environmental assessment for the property. Test results came back last August, finding levels of multiple forms of PFAS well above the state’s maximum contaminant levels.
