A former West Michigan orthodontist will spend 60 years in federal prison after prosecutors said he sexually exploited dozens of children online. The sentence was handed down on Monday in federal court in Grand Rapids and capped a multistate investigation that officials say spanned several years.
Prosecutors: Long Sentence For Long Pattern Of Abuse
According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey announced the sentence yesterday and said, “Shannon’s selfish and senseless exploitation of these children has exposed them to a lifetime of emotional damage.” The Justice Department said the exploitation ran from 2019 through 2024 and involved victims as young as 12.
How The Abuse Was Uncovered
The investigation began after a 16-year-old in North Carolina reported that she had been sexually exploited on Snapchat, as reported by CBS Detroit. A review of Snapchat activity led investigators to identify additional minors across state lines, and authorities say the total number of identified victims in the federal case ultimately reached 18.
Local Practice And Earlier Arrest
Before his arrest, Shannon practiced as an orthodontist in Grandville and also operated an office in Plainwell. Both practices closed after his 2023 arrest, according to earlier reporting. Hoodline coverage detailed the initial case and the therapist’s tip that set the investigation in motion.
Industry reporting notes that Shannon even hired a private forensic examiner to review his phone, and that the examiner turned evidence over to police after finding a large amount of illegal material. Payments, Platforms And Scope
Local reporting tied some of the payments to CashApp and other services, and said court filings show prosecutors found instances in which Shannon paid a victim in foster care nearly $2,000 for explicit videos. FOX 17 and other outlets reported that investigators used CashApp and Snapchat records to trace transactions and identify additional victims.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the investigation was handled by Homeland Security Investigations in coordination with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the Fuquay-Varina Police Department and the Prince George’s County Police Department as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative. The U.S. Department of Justice also noted that Shannon’s yacht in Ottawa County was forfeited as part of the criminal proceedings.
Legal Consequences
