Property of former Grand Rapids metal manufacturer labeled PFAS contamination site

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The former site of a longtime Grand Rapids metal manufacturer has been declared a PFAS contamination site by the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team.

MPART announced Monday that groundwater tested at the former Dexter Lock facility currently exceeds the state’s maximum contaminant levels. Dexter Lock operated at 1601 Madison Ave. from 1916 to 1982 and was an active manufacturing site until 2016.

“In 2021, the former manufacturing building was demolished. A portion of the site has since been redeveloped with a new industrial and office building,” MPART said.

The groundwater testing was done as part of the process to redevelop the site. Several wells showed levels above criteria, including levels of PFOS — perfluorooctanesulfonic acid — at 77 parts per trillion. The state maximum contaminant level is 16 ppt.
