New weapon detection system aims to prevent violence against U-M Health-West workers

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Security is getting tighter at the emergency department at University of Michigan Health-West, with the Wyoming hospital saying it’s working to combat a trend of verbal and physical aggression against health care workers.

On Tuesday, the hospital installed a weapon detection system: an AI-enabled metal detector aimed at keeping patients, visitors and staff safe.

“This is important because of the increased workplace violence that occurs in hospitals,” Gary Gorski, the hospital’s director of security, said. “Verbal aggression, verbal threats, physical assaults are not uncommon at all here.”…
