Groundbreaking held for Boston Square housing development

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids city and community leaders gathered Monday morning in the Boston Square neighborhood to celebrate the start of a $25 million mixed-income, mixed-use development along Kalamazoo Avenue — the second phase of a sweeping, neighbor-driven redevelopment effort years in the making.

The project will add a 45-unit residential and commercial building to the corridor. Of those units, 36 are priced for households earning up to 60% of the area median income. The remaining nine are market rate. The building also includes 10,000 square feet of commercial space earmarked for a future neighborhood food hall.

The development is part of Boston Square Together, a comprehensive redevelopment plan covering 10 acres in the heart of the neighborhood. When complete, the project will include more than 220 housing units, some available for purchase; 40,000 square feet of commercial space for local entrepreneurs; and new parks and green space. Organizers say it will represent the largest investment in Grand Rapids’ Third Ward in more than a generation.
