Kent County commissioner condemns, organizers defend protest outside home

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Protests aimed at elected officials are nothing new but in some cases, those protests are happening outside their homes. On Saturday, a group gathered outside the house of Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Ben Greene, pushing for policy changes.

The group of around 20 people consisted of members of Movimiento Cosecha and GR Rapid Response to Ice, local advocacy groups pushing for sanctuary policies for immigrant communities. They stood outside of Greene’s residence calling on county leaders to adopt six sanctuary policies they say are “intended to prevent Kent County and the Sheriff’s Department from collaborating with ICE in the separation of families.” According to the group, the demonstration was peaceful and nonviolent.

Kent County has no intention of becoming ‘sanctuary’

Greene said he was at home cleaning his house with his family when he found out the group was around the corner from his residence. He said the yelling from the protestors scared his young children.

“I didn’t expect to have to explain to my five-year-old why these people were yelling at my house,” he said. “When I’m at home I’m not a county commissioner. I’m a dad. I’m a husband. That’s my job, is to be there for my family.”…
