Charges move forward against former MI Dems treasurer accused of embezzlement and fraud as woman’s conservator

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The case of a former Michigan Democratic Party treasurer accused of stealing upwards of $123,000 while acting as a woman’s conservator will now move to circuit court, taking another step toward trial.

After more than 3.5 hours of testimony, a Kent County district court judge decided to bound Traci Kornak’s case over to circuit court. Last month, Kornak, 62, was charged with embezzlement of between $50,000 and $100,000 from a vulnerable adult, embezzlement between $1,000 and $20,000 from a vulnerable adult and false pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000. On Friday, prosecutors added a fourth charge: attempt to embezzle $50,000 or more from a vulnerable adult.

Authorities allege the embezzlement took place from 2020 to 2023 while the victim, Rosalene Burd, was a resident at an assisted living facility near Grand Rapids, court documents show. Burd has since died…
