Proposed Zeeland, Jamestown solar farm faces opposition from residents

ZEELAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A proposed multimillion-dollar, nearly 2,000-acre solar farm in Zeeland and Jamestown townships continues to spark strong reactions from community members.

The company behind the Silver Maple Solar project, RWE, held its second of three community meetings this week, giving residents another chance to ask questions and share concerns. Nearly 200 people attended Tuesday night’s meeting, with many returning again Wednesday.

Before the floor opened for public comment, Joseph Brochu, the development manager for RWE, started with a detailed presentation. Throughout the presentation, Brochu spoke on why the company chose the area, the design/environmental impact and economic revenue, which according to the company will be around $30 million, creating around 250 jobs.
