In the summer of 2024, Martin Wolf ’27 helped collect fish from Juneau County streams for parasitology research in the lab of Anindo Choudhury (Biology and Environmental Science). Among three golden shiners captured in a hoop net in Onemile Creek was an unexpected discovery — a tiny, unusual tapeworm unlike any previously known from North America.
After detailed microscopic study, including scanning electron microscopy at St. Norbert College and examination by international tapeworm expert Tomas Scholz of the Czech Republic, the parasite was confirmed to be a species new to science.…
