Mental health support urged for Fox Valley tornado survivors and cleanup crews

APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) — The physical damage from Monday’s tornado is visible across the Fox Valley, but health officials and mental health advocates say the emotional toll deserves equal attention as communities in Menasha, Fox Crossing and Appleton begin to recover.

The Center for Suicide Awareness in Kaukauna said feelings of shock, numbness, anxiety, fear, grief and exhaustion — as well as trouble sleeping — are all normal responses following a disaster. The organization said those experiencing those emotions are not alone, and encouraged residents to check in on friends and neighbors by sending a text, making a phone call or knocking on a door.

For those who are struggling, the Center for Suicide Awareness said a text to the Crisis Text Line can connect them with free, confidential support around the clock. Crisis counselors are available 24/7 by texting 741741.
