Wisconsin Humane Society reaches capacity for cats

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Wisconsin Humane Society campuses statewide are facing a critical space crisis. Over 1,000 cats are currently in their care, with over 300 currently available for adoption.

Shelter officials say the sudden peak comes down to a natural cyclical surge.

“Summer months are always a busy time. There’s always a lot more cats and dogs coming in and out of the shelter. Cats are also seasonal breeders. They breed a lot more in the early spring to late spring. And then they have kittens, and then they come to the shelter in that summer to late summer period. So right now, we’ve just got a lot of those cats in our care,” said Corey Viars, representative for the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Green Bay and Door County campuses.

Resources strained by influx

This surge of cats thins out resources. To get them ready for adoption, the shelter sections off funding and labor for vaccines, microchips and spay-neuter surgeries…
