Lil Jamaica loses its food truck to fire but plans to ‘bounce back’ with a little help from its friends

GREEN BAY – Lil Jamaica owners Derron Wilson and Janel Johnson-Wilson hope to be serving food again soon after a fire destroyed the food truck that serves as the kitchen for their bar and restaurant.

Wilson was going out on Tuesday night to close up the food truck outside the business at 1332 S. Broadway when he saw flames coming out the door. Green Bay Metro Fire Department responded to the call. The fire was contained to the truck, which is stationed permanently in the beer garden.

Fire officials told Wilson the fire started at the stove. After taking to his insurance company, it will likely to be a total loss, Wilson said.

It was the first night that the food truck, which is equipped with a full kitchen, was back in operation after extreme cold the week before made it too difficult to cook.

Lil Jamaica has a smaller, mobile food truck for events but that was stored away for winter. On Wednesday night, friends helped dig it out from the snow, get it pulled out and washed up. Wilson is hoping to be able to use it to temporarily get the business through with a more limited menu, perhaps as early as Thursday or Friday.
