Two marathon runners with ties to the Appleton area fell short in their bids Saturday to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Appleton East graduate Dan Schubert competed in the men’s race at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Orlando, Florida, while Greenville native and Harrison resident Kathy VanDehy ran in the women’s race.
Schubert finished with a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes, 10 seconds and finished 132nd out of 177 men. He ran at a pace of 5:40 per mile.
The 30-year-old Schubert, who lives in Durham, North Carolina, qualified for the Olympic Trials in October when he ran 2:17:42 at the Indianapolis Marathon.
Schubert graduated from Appleton East in 2011 and ran in college at the University of Oklahoma. He won the ThedaCare Half Marathon in 2021 at the Fox Cities Marathon.
Conner Mantz and Clayton Young finished 1-2 to qualify for the Paris Games. Mantz had a time of 2:09:05 as Young gave way near the end and finished one second behind. Leonard Korir finished third, but must wait to see if a third Olympic spot is available for the U.S. men because his time (2:09.57) was just off the time of 2:08.10 needed to guarantee a spot.
