City Council President Nanette Mohr will be the acting mayor of Gillett for the next two months after Josh McCarthy stepped away from the post on Feb. 1.
McCarthy, who had yet to give his official resignation letter as of Thursday, left earlier than the end of his elected term because he decided to move out of the city, according to Clerk-Treasurer Chelsea Anderson.
Mohr said McCarthy inherited a house after his father, Patrick McCarthy, 66, of Suring, died on Dec. 29.
“When he had this opportunity, now that he was willed a home, he just decided to move,” Mohr said.
McCarthy was elected mayor in April 2020 after previously serving as interim mayor. McCarthy began the role in October 2019 after James Beaton resigned under pressure after council members complained he had moved out of the city.
Gillett voters will cast their vote in the April 2 election for the next full-time mayor. Jonathan Blaskowski is the lone candidate on the ballot.
The new mayor will be sworn in on April 16.
Besides the mayoral opening, Gillett also has two vacant positions on the City Council, with no one on the spring ballot seeking to fill those seats.
