Waterspouts possible on bay of Green Bay tonight, National Weather Service says

Following a weekend of rain, a trough of low pressure with cold surface winds will continue to affect northeastern Wisconsin, with possible dangerous conditions on the bay.

The National Weather Service Green Bay warned of possible waterspouts starting Monday evening and into overnight in the bay of Green Bay and southern parts of Lake Michigan. Rain is expected to develop later Monday, and temperatures are forecast to drop into the mid-30s.

Mike Cellitti, meteorologist from the National Weather Service Green Bay, waterspouts are rotating columns of air that descend from the cloud, touch the water and can produce gusty winds and waves. This phenomenon usually takes place when cold air interacts with warm water.

“Water in the bay and the lake are lower to middle 60s,” he said. “Air temperatures aloft are quite cold, near freezing.”

Those temperature difference between air and water can create waterspouts.
