Politics has changed drastically over the years. It used to be about candidates running on their own merits, showing through words and actions why they were the best choice to represent the people. Now, I’m tired of the negative, nasty ads filling my mailbox and TV screen, telling me why I shouldn’t vote for someone. What I really want is to learn why I should vote for a candidate.
Jim Rafter is an exception. When he knocked on my door, he was polite and listened to what I had to say, even though we didn’t agree on everything. Since then, I’ve watched his interviews and ads, where he talks about representing the entire district, not just one party. He draws on his experience as a father, small business owner, and village president to show why he’s qualified to serve us.
Meanwhile, his opponent seems more interested in tearing down Jim Rafter than in telling us why he deserves our vote. If that’s how he campaigns, how can we trust him to work with both sides in Madison? That’s why Jim Rafter has earned my vote.
