De Pere Cinema fundraising to get camper for Hurricane Helene victims

DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) — At De Pere Cinema , sausage, pepperoni, and cheese might be the finishing touches to Vicki Radue’s pizzas, but she and her husband Mike hope it’s just the beginning of helping others start over from scratch.

This week, they are holding a fundraiser at their movie theater, contributing half of their pizza proceeds and 100% of popcorn proceeds toward purchasing a camper for those in Tennessee and North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene.

“There are 17 families that lost their entire homes,” Mike said. “It’s Tennessee, but it’s high enough elevation and in the eastern part of the state where it still gets pretty cold.”

They, along with other groups in Wisconsin, are working to ensure all 17 families have a warm place to live by the time winter arrives. They have connections to volunteers helping in the area, including Nicole Behrendt of Visible Church in Howard.

“What we did see was flood damage; it’s a very poor community,” Behrendt said. “It’s very sad that these people have been left to fend for themselves. It’s sad there’s not more help. It takes a group from Wisconsin, many groups from Wisconsin, to come together to help all these people when no one else is doing it.”
