GREEN BAY − A popular Mexican restaurant is getting a revamp now that its owners own the property, too.
La Carreta , 1657 Main St., is a family restaurant popular for its birria tacos. The business was started by Arturo Cendejas in 2019, and he passed ownership to his daughter, Karen Cendejas, a year ago. The family also owns La Cabañita at 519 S. Military Ave. — the former home of Chili John’s.
Karen Cendejas said the family had been trying to buy the property on Main Street for a few years, they finally got an accepted offer of $470,000 and the deal was signed on Nov. 5.
“We signed the day my grandfather passed,” Cendejas said. “He was the one who created the recipe that made us successful.”
The Cendejas family are from Guanajuato, Mexico, and the taste of their food comes from an old family recipe. Cendejas said in the past that although the seasoning may be similar to other birrias, the cooking process is different.
“It all comes down to the process,” she said. “How much time you boil the meat makes a big difference in flavor.”
