‘Ghost in the Woods’: white buck captivates Kaukauna as DNR reminds that white deer are protected ahead of gun deer season

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV) – On cool summer morning, photographer Dawn Wege thought nothing was out of the ordinary as a large herd of deer grazed in her backyard. Until she saw a giant, white buck emerge from the trees.

“Literally it was like watching a ghost walking through the woods, that’s what I named him,” Wege said. “When he came out I thought he was a horse that got loose, because you just normally don’t see something that’s white like that. And then I could see through the binoculars it was a white buck.”

The buck’s presence has become a regular occurrence for Wege, particularly at dawn and dusk. She has heard that more people in town have also seen the mystical creature.

“I would see it here and there. It was probably, after the first time, I would notice it every week or two. Just kind of became something I kept my eye out for,” Wege said. “It’s the first time I’ve seen a white one. But it seems like it’s popping up, people are seeing him here and there in Kaukauna.”

Wege says that the buck is often with a harem of an estimated 30-40 does that wander her neighborhood and occasionally group together.
