A Friday afternoon house fire in the Town of Ahnapee has left a family without a home for the foreseeable future. Algoma Fire Department was dispatched about 1:30 p.m. to a structure fire on Birch Drive two miles west of Algoma when a nearby neighbor reported the blaze. Fire Chief Tom Ackerman says eight other fire departments from Kewaunee and Door counties were called in for mutual aid and the front of the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived. He says firefighters were able to knock down the fire but only after substantial damage and smoke damage occurred to the house, where nobody was home at the time.
