W-I-N-N-E-R: Appleton sixth-grader wins state spelling bee, advances to national competition

An Appleton student is going to the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning first place at the Badger State Spelling Bee Saturday at the Mitby Theater in Madison, according to a news release from the Wisconsin State Journal.

Jacob Martonito, a sixth-grader at Appleton Classical School , won first place, while seventh-grader Ethan Robert from Eisenhower Middle School in New Berlin took second. Both students will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place May 27-29 in the Washington, D.C. area.
