Man accused of killing cellmate at Green Bay prison plans to withdraw insanity plea

GREEN BAY — A man accused of killing his cellmate at Green Bay Correctional Institution in August 2024 has decided to withdraw his plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Jackson Vogel, 25, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide as a hate crime for the strangling death of 19-year-old Micah Laureano.

Vogel entered the plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect — commonly referred to as an insanity plea or NGI plea — at his arraignment in October . At a status conference March 17, attorneys discussed issues with securing an expert to testify about Vogel’s insanity defense.
