Despite protests from victim’s family, judge accepts plea deal in fatal Green Bay shooting

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — Despite objections from a victim’s family, a judge accepted a plea deal Friday for Michael Putala in connection with a 2023 fatal shooting on the east side.

Michael Putala, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide, while two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety were dismissed but can be considered at the July 23 sentencing.

Putala had been charged with first-degree reckless homicide. The reduction to second-degree means the maximum sentence drops from 60 years in the prison system (initial confinement and extended supervision combined) to 25 years. Each of the dropped charges carried a maximum of 12.5 years in the prison system. Additionally, prosecutors agreed to cap their recommendation at five years in prison as part of the deal…
