Homelessness officials alarmed at Ashwaubenon’s proposed anti-camping law. Village says it’s being misunderstood.

No homelessness service provider was contacted in the making of Ashwaubenon’s proposed ordinance that would ban camping on all public property.

The reason was the same as why no alternatives were considered besides drafting such a law. Village Administrator Joel Gregozeski said the proposed ordinance was neither about solving homelessness nor about the homeless themselves sleeping in parks, along highways, and in wooded areas.

Rather, it was about addressing potential endangerment to themselves by sleeping in such places, the unsanitary conditions they may leave behind, and the resulting disuse of public property by the rest of Ashwaubenon’s residents, he said…
