GBCI could be replaced with mixed-use development upon closure

ALLOUEZ, Wis. (WBAY) – Planning for projects leading to the closure of Green Bay Correctional Institution is now underway, which means the Village of Allouez is one step closer to beginning a mixed-use development where the prison currently stands.

GBCI is the second-oldest prison in Wisconsin. It currently makes up a large portion of what Allouez officials hope to turn into a downtown hub unlike anything the village has ever had.

Allouez’s master plan displays retail shops, apartments, townhomes, outdoor parks, and performance spaces, as well as a connection to the Fox River trail west of Riverside Drive…
