Community Update: Green Bay Police Department discusses pedestrian safety and more

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis and Sergeant Sean Hamill stopped by the Local Five studio on Thursday to discuss pedestrian safety, remote start vehicles, and E-Bikes.

Following daylight saving time, the sun has begun to set earlier, meaning it is getting dark outside sooner during the day. This creates a bit of a safety concern for drivers and pedestrians, something Chief Davis has a not-so-fashionable solution to.

The more visible you can be, the better. The idea is, if you’re a pedestrian, to stand out from your surroundings. So, think about, if you’re going to be out walking after dark, wearing clothes that enable you to be seen. Not a super great fashion statement, but reflective stuff really helps so those drivers can pick you out from what’s along the side of the road.

As far as crosswalk safety goes, Sergeant Hamill says vehicles are required to stop for pedestrians crossing both marked and unmarked crosswalks. Drivers should stop prior to the crosswalk and not continue driving until the pedestrian(s) are completely and safely out of the crosswalk.

Moving to vehicles that have a remote start capability, Chief Davis suggests for people to not leave vehicles unattended with the keys inside. He adds that those who use the remote start to warm up their vehicle should keep the keys on them and the vehicle doors locked, this helps keep vehicles from being stolen…
