Tips for keeping your pets safe and warm during the cold in the Northeast Wisconsin weather

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As temperatures drop across northeast Wisconsin, animal experts are reminding pet owners that cold weather safety applies to pets just as much as people.

While many pets such as cats and birds can stay indoors during extreme cold, dogs still need time outside. Experts say those outings should be kept short to reduce the risk of cold-related injuries.

“When you bring them back inside after that short walk, you want to clean their paws off as soon as you can,” said Corey Biars, media specialist with the Humane Society of Green Bay & Door County. “Because the salt can get inside their paws and cause some irritation.”

Salt and ice melt used on sidewalks and roads can irritate a dog’s paw pads and may lead to cracking or injury if not cleaned off promptly. Experts recommend washing paws with water after walks and checking for signs of irritation…
