APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Several City of Appleton officials honored an 11-year-old girl on Monday who recently proved that heroes are not always just those in uniform.
According to the Appleton Police Department, 11-year-old Josie Pethan was home, sick from school, a few weeks ago, when her mother suffered a sudden cardiac emergency, causing Josie to take immediate action.

Officials say Josie first contacted family members for help with the situation before then calling 911. While on the phone with dispatch, Josie did not hesitate or panic, but instead calmly followed CPR instructions and began life-saving measures until emergency responders could arrive and take over.
It is said that Josie’s quick thinking, courage, and composure helped get her mother’s pulse restored before she was taken to a nearby hospital and able to survive the incident…
