Friends remember Chuck Ramsay, the WBAY news icon who has died at 91

Tom McCarey can wrap up what kind of a man news anchor Chuck Ramsay was in a single story, and that it involves the original Blackstone Restaurant perhaps gives you your first clue.

Decades ago, when WBAY-TV held its Christmas party in the auditorium of the downtown Green Bay building that is still home to the 72-year-old station, it became a tradition for some employees and their spouses to head over to the all-night diner when it was over. It might be 1:30 a.m. and Ramsay and others would be having a cup of coffee and toast.

“People would come up to Chuck to say hi, and he never ever turned anyone away. He was always gracious. Always friendly and very approachable, and that was Chuck Ramsay,” said McCarey, of Green Bay, who worked at WBAY for the better part of 40 years, first as a news photographer and then primarily as news director…
