For more than 100 years, ‘the Castle’ served as church, hall, then shops

The History Museum at the Castle isn’t the only building in Appleton’s history to give off medieval vibes. Built as a church, an imposing building in downtown Appleton served as a meeting hall and later, retail space. Just called “The Castle,” it stood at 205 E. Lawrence St.

It was razed in 1990, after more than 100 years. We took a look back through the archives to see the evolution of this local landmark.

A story written during the razing appeared in the Oct. 11, 1990 Post-Crescent and stated that the stone structure was under construction in 1870 as a Methodist Episcopal church…
