Appleton International Airport is suddenly playing in the big leagues. Passenger traffic has climbed more than 60% since 2019, turning what used to be a mostly local terminal into a launchpad for nonstop trips around the country. The surge is changing how Fox Cities residents travel and chipping away at the growth once dominated by larger Wisconsin airports.
From 2019 to 2025, ATW’s traffic rose by over 60%, a pace that local officials say has outgunned Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay, according to WTAQ. Added routes, bigger planes and a deliberate campaign to make flying out of Appleton quicker and less of a headache have all helped shift travelers away from competing hubs.
Why Appleton Is Growing
Local leaders say the secret is simple: give people more nonstop options and make the airport experience less painful. A major piece of that puzzle arrived when Allegiant announced in 2021 that it would base aircraft and crews in Appleton. Base operations kicked off in 2022, giving the airline the flexibility to boost nonstop service and add seats out of ATW.
Those extra flights, paired with a growing local appetite for both business and leisure travel, have helped turn Appleton from a convenient backup into the first choice for many northeast Wisconsin fliers.
How Bigger Hubs Compare
Wisconsin’s larger airports are still moving more people overall, but they are not matching Appleton’s growth sprint. Milwaukee’s official passenger statistics show 2025 traffic holding steady at roughly recent levels, sometimes slightly below. In Madison, Dane County reports the airport handled nearly 2.5 million travelers in 2025.
