Scammers use stolen identities to work for DoorDash, leaving victims with tax bills

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A local accountant is tracking cases of identity theft involving DoorDash drivers, leaving victims — who are not DoorDash drivers — with surprise tax bills from the IRS.

Kurt Heling, a Neenah accountant with Heling & Associates CPAs, said he had two clients in the last two weeks who received notices from the IRS that they owe taxes from DoorDash income. The clients never worked for the delivery service.

“We’re finding out is, people are using fake IDs when they’re signing up for DoorDash and it gets to be two or three years later and the person with the real ID is getting this IRS notice,” Heling said.

Tax bills reach thousands of dollars

The fraudulent income reported ranges from $24,000 to $30,000, according to Heling. With interest and penalties, the tax bills add up to $8,000 to $12,000…
