Reader asks how WisDOT knows Leo Frigo bridge joint is safe

Reader question:I have a question about the joint on the Leo Frigo bridge. How does WisDOT know it’s safe?Is it really safe?This is important because so many people drive over that bridge every day.

Answer: Brown spots of oxidation dotted a joint on the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge 40 feet above North Quincy Street, a joint functioning and looking much like the space between two squares of sidewalk. Sitting over a pier holding up the bridge that carries over 46,000 cars daily, the joint was craggly from spalling − the chipping away of concrete − noted in the last inspection report from 2024 by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
