City of Appleton honors two people for lifesaving actions

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Two people were awarded last week by the City of Appleton for their life-saving efforts in a situation in 2025.

In a post made on social media, the Civilian Medal of Gallantry was presented before the Common Council by Appleton Police Chief Polly Olson and Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford to Mason Knott and Toni Schoen.

Active investigation in Menasha, no public threat reported

Officials say Knott and Schoen came across someone in 2025 who was on the top level of a downtown parking ramp, appearing to be in crisis. The two remained with the person for what was said to be nearly an hour and a half, offering them compassion and support, while encouraging them to accept help.

Knott and Schoen also contacted police, allowing emergency personnel to respond and assist on the scene. After the situation suddenly escalated, officials say Knott acted without hesitation and helped prevent the person from jumping, allowing officers to then intervene…
