Appleton sets Memorial Day ceremonies to remember the fallen

APPLETON (WLUK) — Appleton’s Moment of Remembrance Cemetery Salutes returns this Memorial Day weekend.

On Sunday, the community is welcomed and encouraged to gather as members of local veteran service organizations assemble and perform somber salutes to veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice and are laid to rest at two cemeteries in Appleton:

  • Noon at Moses Montefiore Cemetery, 899 E. Woodland Avenue
  • 1 p.m. at St. Mary Cemetery, 2121 W. Prospect Avenue

The salutes at both cemeteries will include a prayer, the laying of a memorial wreath, a rifle salute, and the playing of “Taps”. A time of fellowship will follow at the Appleton American Legion Post 38 at 3220 W. College Avenue.

The Moment of Remembrance Cemetery Salutes in Appleton started in 2020 during the COVID pandemic when the city’s Memorial Day parade was cancelled as were salutes that had been done annually at some of the city’s cemeteries. That year, the Scarlet Guard American Legion Color Guard coordinated salutes at the five cemeteries in the city of Appleton to ensure that the hometown heroes laid to rest in the city were not forgotten. Those cemeteries included Riverside Cemetery, St. Joseph Cemetery, Moses Montefiore Cemetery, Highland Memorial Park, and St. Mary Cemetery. After the pandemic three of those cemeteries’ annual traditions reconvened. The Scarlet Guard American Legion Color Guard decided to continue coordinating and performing the salutes annually at Moses Montefiore Cemetery and St. Mary Cemetery so that the veterans there continue to receive annual recognition of their sacrifices…
