PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — A new pattern is developing for the days ahead, bringing cooler, wetter weather to the Piedmont for the end of the week.
A cold front is working its way toward the Appalachians today, and ahead of the front, a southwest breeze is boosting the heat and humidity. High temperatures rise to the lower-90s this afternoon with a slim 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms.
There is a Level 2/Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms this evening and overnight, roughly from US 64 northward. The primary threat will be from damaging winds. Lows are expected to hover in the mid-70s.
The cold front slides across the Carolinas tomorrow, producing heavy rain at times and the threat of severe thunderstorms. There is a Level 2/Slight Risk of severe weather from the Triad-eastward, with the primary threats being damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. We also have a Level 2/Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall tomorrow, highlighting the risk of flash flooding across the entire viewing area as well. Highs will be cooler, in the lower-80s. Rainfall totals could exceed 2 to 3 inches from heavy rain.
Starting Thursday, high temperatures cool to the mid-70s, and showers continue to slowly soak into Piedmont soils. We will have a steady northeast breeze as the cold front stalls to our south and east. With this set-up, rain chances hover around 60% through Saturday.
By Sunday, a drying trend is expected. There will be some lingering showers Sunday morning, followed by partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-80s…
