NORTH CAROLINA — As of the latest satellite update, the best eclipse viewing tonight appears to be from the Greensboro and Winston-Salem area back toward the mountains and foothills. Central and eastern North Carolina are battling lots of scattered to numerous clouds, which could obscure the view for many hoping to catch tonight’s celestial event.
Clearer Skies Favor Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and the Foothills
Satellite imagery shows a favorable corridor of clearer skies stretching from near Mount Airy and Winston-Salem southwest through Martinsville and toward Hickory. This zone offers the best opportunity for unobstructed eclipse viewing compared to areas farther east.
Communities including Wytheville and Bluefield, just across the Virginia border, are also seeing more favorable conditions, extending the clearer-sky corridor along the western edge of North Carolina.
Mountains and Western Foothills Also Offering Good Viewing
Farther west, communities including Asheville, Boone, and Hendersonville are positioned within another zone of relatively clear skies, offering additional strong viewing opportunities across the western mountains and foothills region of the state.
Knoxville, Tennessee, and Greenville, South Carolina, are also within this favorable viewing corridor, suggesting the clear conditions extend beyond North Carolina’s borders into the broader southern Appalachian region.
