Curtis Royal sees a problem in downtown Greensboro’s nightlife. Safety incidents are causing concern amongst patrons, businesses are closing, and the city simply isn’t perceived as a top social destination.
The 43-year-old Greensboro native wants to bring back the vibrant local club culture he remembers from his 20s, so he’s doing it himself. If his plans hold, Royal will by year-end be running three nightlife businesses. He says his emphasis will be on safety and sophistication.

The former bouncer and nightclub manager opened his Crown nightclub in April, six weeks after signing the lease at 318 S. Elm St. His sports bar, Sideline Social, two doors over at 312 S. Elm St., will open in September. Soon, he plans to add Boston’s, a nightclub to be turned into an event venue at 1011 Arnold St., to his collection.
