OAK RIDGE, N.C. (WGHP) — Visitors to Heritage Farm Park in Oak Ridge have a new way to remember those lost on September 11, 2001, with two newly installed pillars near the park’s existing Veterans Honor Green.
The pillars, designed to represent the Twin Towers that were attacked nearly 25 years ago, feature a 100-pound piece of steel beam from the South Tower, which was donated by D.H. Griffin Companies.
In the days after the attacks, the president of D.H. Griffin, David Griffin, Jr., traveled to New York City and volunteered his time at Ground Zero. He later oversaw all cleanup efforts at the site.
The Town of Oak Ridge started the process of erecting the memorial back in 2019, according to Patti Dmuchowski, vice chair for the town’s Special Events Committee. The memorial originally was a very simple display of two blue spotlights at the Oak Ridge Town Hall on their flag, but a desire for a more permanent memorial persisted…
