DUDLEY — A long thunderstorm delay in the first half of Friday night’s, Sept. 18, varsity football clash with host Southern Wayne didn’t keep Southern Nash from completing its business.
Once play resumed, the Firebirds broke a 14-all deadlock on a 1-yard run by sophomore Trey Smith with 3 minutes, 18 seconds to play then survived a final drive by the Saints that ended with Firebirds sophomore Zavad Curtis’ interception in the red zone to seal the 21-14 victory in the 5-A/6-A Big East Conference opener for both teams.
Southern Nash (3-2, 1-0 Big East) was up 7-0 with 27 seconds to go in the first quarter when lightning, then heavy rain, intervened. The Firebirds got a 7-yard scoring run from D.J. Baker, followed by Brayden Wells’ PAT kick at the 6:56 mark of the first quarter and that held until the teams returned at 8:50 p.m. following a delay of more than 90 minutes…
