Work on Regency Inn should start soon in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) – After more than two years of no movement to turn a Greensboro motel into permanent supportive housing for the homeless, we might finally start seeing some progress.

City leaders told FOX8 the California-based organization Step Up is expected to close on the land in a few weeks and begin work on the Regency Inn.

The city is waiting on environmental reviews to come back to make sure the land is okay. Once Step Up closes on the property, crews can start work fairly quickly and get these rooms ready in about a year.

“We are disappointed in the progress, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad project,” said Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan. “It just meant we were slow off the starting blocks.”

Vaughan admitted the plans to turn the Regency Inn into permanent supportive housing haven’t moved as quickly as anticipated.

The process started in November of 2021when the city made a $3 million investment for Partnership Homes to purchase the old motel. When the organization wasn’t able to fulfill its promise to revitalize the Regency Inn, city council turned to Step Up in May of 2023 to buy, renovate and manage the motel.
