20 inches of snow hit Central North Carolina on this day 24 years ago

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — 24 years ago today, temperatures weren’t in the 60s and 70s. Instead, we were in the beginning stages of the biggest snowstorm in the Triangle’s history.

We had cars having a little bit too much fun on the roads, kids playing in the snow, and snowballs becoming way more common than snowplows on the streets. Okay, in all seriousness, how did this event even happen?

“Surprise! It was the most surprising storm we’ve ever had in Central North Carolina,” said Bill Reh, former CBS 17 meteorologist back in 2021, reliving the events of those two January days.

It was a forecasted event by computer models. Most data kept the snow in Eastern North Carolina, up to the day before the Triangle got buried. It’s safe to say with the technology we have now, it’s highly unlikely that we would be surprised by 20 inches of snow with no warning.
